Search with Safari first
Safari's tab overview is a useful visual search surface, especially when the tabs are in one window. The address field can also help you reopen a page from history, but a history result is not necessarily an already-open tab.
Before opening another copy, look for the existing tab. This avoids duplicate pages, preserves the page's current state and reduces the number of tabs you later need to clean up.
Search all visible open tabs in one list
TabCaptain presents accessible Safari tabs across windows and filters the list as you type. Search works best with a distinctive title fragment, product name, domain or topic rather than a generic word such as “home.” Domain grouping provides a second clue when several results use similar titles.
Search, domain grouping and opening an individual result are included free. The list is a navigation tool: it does not upload your tab-management data to an account or third-party analytics service.
A repeatable search habit
Search before opening a new copy of a page. If the result set is still large, switch to a domain-grouped view or sort by name. When a project should be set aside rather than searched every day, save the whole set as a session and restore it when needed.
- Use two or three distinctive words.
- Try the website name when the title is unclear.
- Check more than one Safari window before assuming the page is closed.
- Use the duplicate guide if several identical URLs appear.
